It’s not quite winter here in Texas, but it’s coming. Some places have gotten a chill in the air and winter will soon come. Here is a lotion bar recipe perfect for dry skin. To use, simply rub a bit on your dry skin; your body will melt the lotion bar and you can rub it in.
Lavender Lotion Bars
Shea butter – 8 oz
Cocoa butter – 4 oz
Beeswax – 6 oz
Coconut oil – 8 oz
Lavender EO – .75 oz
For a firmer lotion bar, try this recipe.
Shea butter – 8 oz
Cocoa butter – 6 oz
Beeswax – 8 oz
Coconut oil – 4 oz
Lavender EO – .75 oz
Step 1 – Weigh out the wax and butters into a microwavable container and melt in the microwave, just until melted. Stir every 30 seconds or so while melting.
Step 2 – Add the coconut oil to the melted wax and butters and stir. If you need to heat a bit more to make sure everything is melted, then heat for about 30 seconds.
Step 3 – Let the temperature drop to about 120 degrees F and add the lavender essential oil.
Step 4 – Pour into molds. I used hard plastic peace sign molds for these. You can use any molds that you want.
Step 5 – Package in flat tins. Make sure your mold is short enough to package in flat tins. I had to fill the peace signs only to about 3/4″ full.
Step 6 – Enjoy your lotion bars!
Hi there!
Is it possible to calculate the percentage of this formula? How can I do it?
Thanks a lot
I did a simple rule of three to calculate the percentage, can you confirm that this is correct?
Firm Lotion Bar:
30% shea butter
22% cocoa butter
30% Beeswax
15% coconut oil
3% lavender EO
I don’t know what the simple rule of 3 is, but to calculate percentages just add up ALL the weights. Then take the weight of each ingredient and divide it by the total. Multiply by 100 to put it in %s.
Jessica. To calculate the %’s, add up the ingredients to get a total weight. In this case 26.75 oz’s. To calculate the % of each ingredient, divide the total weight into the amount of the ingredient. In example 8 oz ÷ 26.5 oz x 100 = 30%. This works for any formula. 0.75 ÷ 26.5 x 100 = 2.8%.
Hi there. Can the beeswax be substituted with soy or another plant based alternative please?
The sole purpose for using beeswax is it’s a very hard wax and will keep the bar from melting. You can substitute with a different equally hard wax and/or you may have to do less oil and up the Cocoa butter if the bar isn’t hard enough for melts
So many questions asking where to find the peace mold. I would love to know that as well.
What type of beeswax first you use? I normally use filtered but it has a natural honey smiley scent. I’d love to use other FO’s or EI’s and not have the beeswax scent come through. Have you tried the white beeswax? I have some but have yet to try it. Just curious.
Hi Amanda, This is my favorite lotion bar recipe – thank you for sharing! I bought some 2 oz dial up stick dispensers and am wondering if I should use the firmer recipe with those.
Amazing recipe as all your wonderful recipes. Thank you Amanda!
I upped the beeswax but should have done a trial. The lavender smells odd. I think that my wax and butters were too hot when I added the EO. Thus is my first try with lotion bars. Is it still okay to use?
Great idea. I’m looking for a recipe that’s not too greasy and won’t melt with the warm weather can anyone tell me that has tried this recipe is it fairly hard or more on the softer melts side. Thanks
A little on the soft side. I upped the beeswax on my second batch. I also halved the recipe for testing.
This recipe is a bit soft for warm weather. You can up the beeswax to make it more firm.

That’s the one!
Jbressler.com has a peace sign mold. Amanda where did you get your mold? So cute.
I live in SW Louisiana and looking for soapmaking classes in the Beaumont, Houston or Austin area. Any classes there?

Do you need to use cocoa butter and Shea butter or is just one ok for recipe?
This ingredients/recipe is so similar to lip balms what separates the two?
And friend of mine wanted a lotion bar with these same exact ingredients. But I have one question for you. In this recipe did you use 76 degree coconut oil or fractionated coconut oil?
Great questions! I used 76 degree coconut oil.
I wanna try this! One of my problem is having a dry skin. I just want to ask if it is applicable to use it on face? thank you.
I tried this recipe with the oatmeal milk n honey scent. It was very moisturizing and wonderfully scented, but I found it a bit too soft to comfortably handle. Could I reduce the shea butter and coconut oil and bump up the cocoa butter and beeswax and get an effective, slightly harder, bar? I am going to try equal parts of each oil and butter and see what happens. Any suggestions from your end? Thanks!!
Wish you got a reply. I asked basically the same question without response. I think just increasing the beeswax. I’m going to include dimethicone, IPM snd cyclomethicone too. I don’t like the lotion bar so soft that they melt in your hand and that makes it difficult to handle plus they melt when it gets to be warm temperature. The lotion bars can be easily remeltef and add more beeswax melt the beeswax first add to the melted lotion bars that you’ve already made and it should harden up a bit.
That sounds good, or you could just add more beeswax without modifying any other ingredients.
When I want a harder, less greasy lotion bar I use mango butter, beeswax and just a little bit of cocoa butter. You could leave out the coconut oil completely. Sometimes I will use some apricot oil but I found that coconut oil makes them too greasy. I also use IPM and Dimethicone. I haven’t used Cyclomethicone in them yet but I have some that I use to make Dry Oil Body Sprays. 🙂 Basically with lotion bars you just need to play with the recipe until you find what works best for YOU. I like them harder and drier which is why I use what I said above. 🙂
Do you have a recipe that you would share? I love mango butter, but want to get the ratios right. It’s tough for me because my hands are extremely warm and I always seem to melt lotion bars too much. Thank you.
Hi!
Is it possible to calculate the percentage of this formula? How can I do it?
Thanks a lot!
Where can I get the tins for lotion bars? And what is the diameter of the tins you used? I am going to try these for family gifts and it they turn out well, offer them at my farmer’s markets!
Thanks for the recipe,
Wallis

These are 3″ tins you can find at Wholesalesuppliesplus.com.
The peace sign is so cute. These make such great winter time gifts for any occasion =)
Oops…I dumped everything in except lavender oil. It took forever for the bees wax to melt and of course the coconut oil melted on contact. I just poured it all and maze stainless steel double more pot on low until the beeswax melted then pour it in the mold now I’m waiting
Amanda , is the coconut oil you used fractionated or just regular coconut oil-sorry for silly question. Love that it has Shea Butter.
Hello! Regular coconut oil.
Thanks Amanda, how many lotion bars does this recipe make ?
Hi Tina – this recipe makes 26 oz total. So it depends on your mold. I poured about 2 oz into each peace sign mold so made about 13.
Nice! Thanks so much. I’m definitely going to try this. 🙂
